Funeral services for Garry Donovan Fondel, 33, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, in Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church. The Revs. Freddie Brown and Walter Houston will officiate. Burial will be in Combre Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Fondel Memorial Chapel.
Visitation is 5-6 p.m. today in the funeral home and from 9 a.m. Saturday in the church.
Mr. Fondel died at 2:06 p.m. Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, in a local hospital.
He grew up in Lake Charles and attended A.A.Nelson Elementary and S.J.Welsh Junior High School. He was a 1985 honors graduate of Barbe High School; he was student council president, band captain, first-chair tuba and tuba section sergeant. He was a member of the honor society. He was a 1986 honors graduate of Commonwealth College of Mortuary Science in Houston. He opened Fondel Memorial Chapel of Houston in September 1993. He served as manager, funeral director, chapel musician, mortician and insurance agent. He was a notary public.
He was a member of the state and national morticians' associations. He was a past worshipful master of Prince Hall Magnolia Lodge 3 and was a member of Sunrise of Royal Arch 77 and Douglas Burrell Consistory 66. He was a member of the NAACP. He was a member of Fourth Missionary Baptist Church; he served in the Sunday school and music departments.
Survivors include his wife, Kim Fondel of Houston; two daughters, Ke'Yonna Fondel and Kellie Fondel, both of Houston; three sisters, Trimone F. Alex and Rosa L. Fondel, both of Lake Charles, and Lindsy Papion of Largo, Md.; two brothers, Gerald W. Fondel and George C. Fondel Jr., both of Houston; his parents, George C. and Theresa Cain Fondel Sr. of Lake Charles; and his maternal grandmother, Eleanor Simmons of Lake Charles.
