IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Melvin Nelson
James Tibbett
February 22, 1953 – October 18, 2025
Melvin Nelson James Tibbett was born on February 23, 1953, in Lake Charles, Louisiana, to Tom and Myrtle Tibbett. After graduating from high school, Nelson and his parents relocated to Houston, Texas, where he gave his life to Christ as a devoted member of Christian Faith Church under the leadership of Pastor Leroy Joseph.
Nelson later married Elaine Butler (Tibbett), and to this union were born three sons, Leslie Tibbett, Tonta "Bear" Tibbett, Christopher Butler, and one daughter, Shasta Hardin (David). From his second union with Gwendolyn Barnett (Tibbett), he was blessed with a son, William "Tyrone" Barnett, and a daughter, Emerald White. After returning to Lake Charles, he met his lifelong partner, Mary Hagger, with whom he shared many cherished years.
Throughout his life, Nelson worked diligently as a laborer for Reece's Supply Company and American Marble. He was known for his strong work ethic, kind spirit, and warm smile. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, playing dominoes, listening to great music, and, most of all, spending time with his family, whom he loved dearly.
On October 17, 2025, Nelson peacefully departed this life after speaking with his son, reassuring him that "all is well with my soul." He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Myrtle Tibbett, brothers Charles Tibbett and Robert Wiggins, and sisters Marion Thomas and Evalina Tippy.
Nelson leaves to cherish his memory his beloved life partner Mary Hagger, his children Leslie Tibbett, Tonta "Bear" Tibbett, Christopher Butler, William "Tyrone" Barnett, and Shasta Hardin (David); his devoted niece Denise Thomas (daughter of Marion Thomas); cousins Lois Wise and Jethro Wiggins; along with a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives, and friends who loved him dearly.
Nelson will forever be remembered for his warm heart, his unwavering faith in God, and the joy he brought to everyone around him. His life was a testament to love, family, and faith, and his legacy will continue to live on through all who knew and loved him.
