Ollie Doris Gill Johnson was born the fourth child and only girl of eight to the late Hiawatha Sr. and Cressie Gill on June 9, 1940 in the Dies Community in Woodville, Texas.
On April 12, 2023 at 10:45 AM an anointed warrior on the battlefield of life passed through Glory's Morning Gate as she put down her sword in the sands of time and quietly slipped away into blessed peace to be with her God. She was preceded in death by her parents and four brothers; Matthew Gill, Joseph Gill, Titus Gill, and Lou Gill.
Ollie accepted Christ the Lord and Savior of her life at an early age and united with the Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church under the Pastoral of her grandfather, the late Reverend Maud Frazier. She received her elementary education in a one-room church school in the Dies Community and Scott Elementary School in Woodville, Texas. She graduated from Henry T. Scott High School in 1958 as Valedictorian of her class. She further advanced her education at Prairie View A&M University where she received a B.S. Degree in elementary education with a minor in Physical Education. She began her teaching career in Woodville, Texas after she completed her undergraduate education.
On July 5, 1963, Ollie was united in holy matrimony to Joseph P. Johnson. This union was blessed with one son.
She later accepted teaching positions in Houston, Texas; Corpus Christi, Texas;
Portland, Texas; Bay City, Texas and in Calcasieu Parish School System in Lake Charles, LA where she retired.
She furthered her education at Lamar University, Texas Southern University and Prairie View A&M University earning a Master's degree in Special Education and Administration and Supervision. While in the Calcasieu Parish School system, she was an assistant principal, acting principal, and Supervisor of Special Education for more than twenty years. She impacted the lives of many students and teachers. She encouraged the students to further their education and teachers to be all they could be as they went about changing the lives of the students they taught.
Ollie united with First Baptist Church of Portland, Texas where she worked with the youth in Vacation Bible School. After moving to Lake Charles, Louisiana, she united with New Emmanuel Baptist Church and became a member of the Sanctuary Choir and served as Secretary of the choir. She was also Director of Sunday School, member and recording secretary of the mission, Program Coordinator, member and secretary of the Usher Board. Her life was further enriched as she became a member of the National Association of University Women, Phi Delta Kappa, and Delta Kappa Gamma.
Left in God's care and to cherish her memory are her husband, Joseph P. Johnson of the home; son, Rogernal L. Johnson (Dana) of Mt. Holly, NC; one grandson, Darius Johnson (Cindy) of Whiteman AB, MO; great-granddaughter Grace Johnson; three brothers, Author Gill, Howard Gill, and Hiawatha Gill, Jr. (Laverne) all of Houston, Texas; three additional sisters-in-law, Serena Gill of Lafayette, Louisiana, Aretha Gill and Cookie Gill of Houston, Texas, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Her nieces, nephews, and cousins will miss her advice and words of inspiration.
Her church family, friends, and organization members will also share in missing her memories. Ollie was known for her devotion to God, family and the education of children as well as her kindness and giving gifts of love.
