Obituary

Unita Rena Banks Scott was born on February 5, 1956 in Shreveport, Louisiana to the late Addie Allen and James Kirk. She was a beloved daughter of the late Alonzo and Maggie Banks. She joined Mt. Zion C.M.E. Church at a very young age. She was a proud graduate of Webster High School Class of 1974. She attended Grambling State University and Southern University in Shreveport, LA. Unita married the late Jimmy Ray Scott in 1978. She held several positions, but she was well known for over two decades as a teacher at Mother Goose Land Head Start through Webster Parish Community Services in Minden, LA. Unita had a very generous heart and was known for her kindness. She loved her old school music, grilling, frying her chicken, playing cards and dominoes, being outside any chance she could get, spending time with her family  and close friends. She was a very prideful woman, an amazing sister and loved her kids, grands and great grands with all of her heart. Unita was called home on January 14, 2026 at Grand Cove Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Lake Charles, LA.

She is survived by her children: Kalista Martin, Shevonda Scott and Travion Mitchell. Grandchildren: Kandria Banks (San Antonio, Texas) Roderick Martin, Jr. (Trinidy), Alonzo Banks, Larryon Hadnot, Larryunta Hadnot, Sha'Mel Scott and Sha'Nyla Scott. Great Grandchildren: Roderick Martin III, Ro'Miere Martin, Rhyan Martin, Ra'Leigh Martin, Ra'Lynn Martin, Rhylo Martin and Kayden Banks. Her Big Sis Lutricia McDonald Dunn (Leroy). Siblings: Stella Hill (Omaha, Nebraska) Marcus Russ (Omaha, Nebraska) Alice "Faye" Thomas (Omaha, Nebraska) Regina Cowart (Glendale, Arizona) Veronica Young (Houston, Texas) Her nephew which was loved as her 1st born Earl McDonald (Tanaka) and great niece Amira McDonald (Houston, Texas) Step-son, Jeremy Key (Houston, Texas).

She was preceded in death by her siblings: Mary Tyler, Dorothy Smith, James "Sunny" Thomas, Robert "Kirk" Thomas and great grand-daughter Ka'Mya Banks. Unita had a host of nieces, nephews and relatives in Nebraska, Arizona, Texas and all over and a long list of close friends back home in Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Georgia and all over that were like family and was well known back home in her community.

The family sincerely appreciates every act of kindness and love shown during our time of bereavement, may the Lord bless and keep you.
